Scope and Contents

Mss. 83.C36: Papers, 1950-1982, of R. Harvey Chappell, Jr., relating particularly to his tenures as president of the Virgina State Bar and the Richmond Bar Association and as a member of the council and executive committees of those organizations. Includes correspondence relating to philanthropic endeavors as well as to certain legal cases. The collection includes numerous legal briefs and documents as well as printed volumes.<p>

Subjects covered by the papers include advertising by lawyers, contingency fees, the unauthorized practice of law, legal aid, legal ethics, lawyer referrals, legal assistants (paralegals) and the Crippled Children's Hospital of Richmond, Va. Addition to the collection (1992.44) contains 20 boxes of professional papers relating to the American Bar Association, American College of Trial Lawyers, and the W & M Law School.  See inventory for complete folder listing. Addition to the collection (1994.87) contains correspondence of Chappell as president of Eta Circle, Omicron Delta Kappa and as president of the Wythe Law Club at the College of William and Mary. Includes constitution of the Wythe Law Club.<p>

Addition to the collection (1999.19B) contains correspondence between Chappell and Supreme Court Justices Lewis F. Powell, Jr. (1985-1996), Harry A. Blackmun, William J. Brennan, Jr., Warren E. Burger, Thurgood Marshall, Sandra Day O'Connor, William H. Rehnquist, Antonin Scalia, John Paul Stevens, and Bryan R. White, 1985-1990 and between Chappell and other individuals, including Brian Dickson, Kenneth Starr, Charles Robb et al 1985-1996.
