Historical Note
John Benjamin Belt was born around 1821 in Washington, D.C. He attended St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland as a boarding student from 1848-1849, and married Maria del Carmen Munoz y Romay in Havana, Cuba, in 1855. During the American Civil War, Belt assisted Jefferson Davis with obtaining a port for Conferederate ships in Cuba. Belt's grandson, Guillermo "Bill" Belt, was an ambassador to the United States in the late 1940s and at one time was a mayor of Havana.
