Historical Note
Mary Erskine Heilman Munger was born in 1883 in Evansville, Indiana, to George Philip Heilman and Lura Fellows Heilman, and died in 1967 in Portland, Oregon from Parkinson’s disease. After her studies in social work at Nortwestern University, Mary worked as a school teacher in domestic science for several years and then married in May 1916 Thornton T. Munger (1883-1975), a research scientist for the U.S. Forest Service in Portland, Oregon. The couple had three children Theodore Thornton (1920-1922), James Duncan (b.1921), and Osgood Heilman (b.1924). Mary was active in various social organizations including the Consumer League, the League of Women Voters, and the American Association of University Women.
